SFWMRT Training in NZ

The results don’t tell the whole story (thank goodness).

The main goal of our trip to New Zealand for the New Zealand Women’s Match Racing Championship was to learn as much as we could about the boats and the conditions before the World Championships in Auckland next month.  That goal was achieved with flying colors!  The practice day and regatta were plagued with very light winds and strong currents, so we spent most of the regatta learning as we were going – not the best scenario for trying to win a regatta, but a very good scenario for the purpose of our trip – a training event.  The day after the regatta we spent training with Katie Spithill and her team and coach, Traks Gordon, in some fantastic sailing conditions.  That day was worth its weight in gold as Karina and I came away with pages of notes and a very good sense of how to make the boats go.

Our whole Worlds team will be gathering in Sydney, Australia the week before the Worlds to train in the same type of boats for a week and do another practice regatta.  Our experience this past week will allow us to start off that training at a much higher level which should show dividends at the Worlds – when it really matters!

Thanks for your continued support and encouragement!

Cheers,
Liz, Karina, Lee, Suzy, Taylor and Hannah
